Payton Carrington Dudley Sr., 78 of Lucedale, passed away Friday, November 19, 2021 at Providence Hospital in Mobile, Ala. He was born November 3, 1943, in Columbus, GA at Fort Benning where his dad was stationed during World War II. His family moved to Lucedale in 1946. He graduated from Lucedale High School in 1961 and attended Perkinston Jr. College and Mississippi State. After serving in the National Guard, he was employed at Ingall’s Shipbuilding as paymaster and later as an insurance agent for Ross King Walker. Payton and his family moved from Moss Point back home to Lucedale in 1988 where he served as the City of Lucedale Alderman Ward IV for 24 years. He also served on the Salvation Army, Red Cross and Gulf Coast Community Action Agency boards for many years. He was an active member of First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary Sue Havard Dudley, and two sons, Payton Jr. and Tuffy; two brothers, Tim (Diane) Dudley and Jan Dudley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tim and Daphne Dudley, and grandparents, William Peyton (Mattie) Dudley and Fletcher Carrington (Cordie) Bousman. He loved people, attending First Methodist and playing golf with his buddies. He was a devoted husband and a loving father. He leaves many friends to cherish his memory. Visitation and funeral services were held on Sunday, November 21, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church of Lucedale. Services were officiated by Rev. Larry White and Rev. David Newton. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery. Pallbearers were Lance Reid, Carlton Reid, Blake Reid, Claude Passeau, J.T. Moody and Mike Nyman. Honorary pallbearers were Jimmy Havard, William Reid, Dayton Whites, A.B. Brantley, Johnny Ward, Poochie Stringfellow, Hollis Welford, Hubie Parker and past and present Lucedale City officials and employees. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, 5101 Main Street, Lucedale, MS 39452. George County Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
