Funeral services were held for Troy Daniel Nickelson, 92, of Brandon, formerly of Lucedale, on Thursday, June 20, 2019, at 12:30 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home Chapel in Ridgeland.
Interment followed in Parkway Memorial Cemetery in Ridgeland.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy who served in World War II until his ship, the LST808, was lost due to enemy action off the coast of Iwo Jima; a retired worker for Nabisco for 37 years and for Goodwill Industries for 35 years; an active member of the Exchange Club of Mississippi for many years; and an active member of the Woodland Hills Baptist Church for over 50 years, he died June 15 in Jackson. He was born in Wayne County. He never met a stranger and was always willing to help others. He enjoyed people, gardening and his church family.
He is survived by his daughter Angie (Phil) Cook of Jackson, grandson Ben Crystal of Starkville and sister Jane (Curtis) Prescott of Lucedale.
He was preceded in death by his one true love of 50 years, Jonnie L. Thornton Nickelson; parents Columbus “Lum” and Lillie Stevens Nickelson; and siblings Gertrude Eubanks, Bermell Brashier, Ann Amzie Yapes, Floyd Nickelson, Roy Nickelson, Raymond Nickelson and David Nickelson.
Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland was in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mississippi State Veterans Home.
