A series of apparently random shootings have Lucedale police hoping to apprehend suspects before someone is hurt or killed.
Police Chief Kellum Fairley said the shootings began about two weeks ago with a birthday party being held at a home near the intersection of Church and Manila streets. While the party was in progress, a car pulled up and one or more gunmen opened fire. No one was injured by the hail of bullets and the shooters were not identified. Police picked up 10 – 15 expended 9 mm shell casings at the scene.
Fairley said witnesses thought they saw four young men in their late teens or early 20s in the vehicle. Three of the men may have been black and one white, although identities could not be positively made.
A few days later a similar shooting incident occurred at the close of a funeral. One vehicle was struck in the trunk by a bullet.
Shootings have also taken place in the City Park and a vehicle near the police station was hit.
Luckily there have been no injuries during these incidents. Fairley said he did not think the shooters really intended to hurt anyone, that they were instead “acting the fool.”
Anyone with information about these shootings is asked to come forward before someone is injured or something much more serious takes place.
