Courthouse Dome ~ One hundred eleven years and still standing

A rare inside look at the 111 year-old George County Courthouse dome

A cool breeze streamed through the opened sash, welcome relief against the late August heat and humidity, as workmen finished hurricane damage repairs. The damage to the George County Courthouse dome had been relatively minor, mostly requiring repairs to aluminum window frames and replacing colored glass panes.

Hurricane Zeta roared through George County the evening of October 28, 2020, damaging nearly 950 homes, uprooting or breaking down so many trees that for a time virtually every road in the county was impassable. As the storm barreled its way towards Alabama, it left the county with millions of dollars of damage and nearly everyone without electrical power.
