Multiculturalism – Good or Bad
Posted: April 10, 2018

The United States in the modern age, 1960-present, has hosted an array of diverse peoples from all over the world. These people seem to largely mix in what’s known as the "melting pot" of America. We in South Mississippi have seen this to a small degree, but if one ventures to our larger cities, the difference is much greater. Many people will hail this phenomena as a positive for the country, while others bemoan the fact that the country is changing-and in many ways not for the better.

Illegal Immigration in the U.S.
Posted: April 05, 2018

The topic of illegal immigration to the U.S. has been explosive. At issue is whether the U.S. has the right to stop illegal entry or the duty to offer safe haven to those streaming across the border. As far back as the 1920s, the U.S. has had to address illegal entry into this country. Numbers up until the 1970s were relatively small and usually driven by a booming U.S. economy or political upheaval in Latin America.

What’s in a road?
Posted: March 20, 2018

On any day, thousands of George Countians travel down one of the many roads that crisscross the area. As we travel, little thought is given as to the history that the county roads often contain. The area that would become George County was originally part of the French holdings along the Gulf Coast. As Frenchmen began to settle in the Mobile and Biloxi areas in the early 1700s, many adventurers pushed into this area, mostly in search of riches, and finally in a quest to establish trade with local Native tribes. These early traders would remark on the abundance of huge pine trees in the area and the ease with which paths could be cleared in the wilderness.  The "pine barrens" as they called it, would allow a rider on a horse to go at a full gallop through the woods because the huge pines blocked the sunlight and stopped undergrowth that would bar the way.

Trump and Rural America
Posted: February 22, 2018

In 2016 Donald Trump was put into the White House with the help of rural voters. Trump defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton by an almost two to one margin in rural and small town America. George County was one of many rural counties that went for Trump big. Trump received 88% of the vote in George County, compared to 10% for Hillary Clinton. Republicans such as Trump have appealed to rural and small town voters ever since the Civil Rights movement.

A Katrina Revelation
Posted: June 18, 2014

My mother, Evelyn Frances Stringer Brown, maintained her home on a small farm five miles southeast of Lucedale in the farming community of Ward until June 19, 2005, her 97th birthday. She had lived alone since my father Grady C. Brown died in May 1981. She was assisted by my sister Marilyn Frances Brown Bounds, who built a home nearby soon after Daddy died.

Hospital Bond Referendum
Posted: April 08, 2014

On June 3, the people of George County will be asked to vote on an expansion of our hospital. Anyone who has been a recent patient will understand this pressing need. The need to expand the ER space is particularly critical. The current bed space in the ER is 1/3 of that required for the current number of patients served.

Wouldn’t it be Great if. . .?
Posted: February 26, 2014

Wouldn’t it be great if enough Americans signed up on saveourhealthcare.org to convince Washington, D.C. that America wants good paying jobs, not Americans becoming slaves to the Washington, D.C. government.

Some Good in the Bad-
Posted: February 05, 2014

Yes, we  experienced some bad weather last  week. Never have George Countians experienced such bad icing on our highways and byways over the past 75 years. Maybe this is something we experience in George County once every 100 years. That is, unless we experience it again this week or next week.

"Too Embarrassing to Read"
Posted: January 30, 2014

I daresay that everyone has experienced embarrassing moments during their life's stretch. Most moments you'd just as soon forget, which means, "Don't bring the subject up." But I agree with psychologists like Freud who say it's best not to keep unpleasant occurrences locked inside. Talking about them can make you feel better.

The President Knows Better-
Posted: January 30, 2014

President Obama says marijuana is no worse than alcohol. He knows better than that. He knows adding marijuana as a legal product just doubles the trouble of people becoming addicted. An addiction just leads to more troubles. Why is our President taking his position on legal marijuana? Maybe to get the support of those who sell and use marijuana.

A Thanksgiving With Guilt
Posted: December 04, 2013

The truth is...when my friend was hurt, it wasn't easy to stop crying, but it was easy to stop talking. I'd witnessed an attack on a special friend, but I was also frightened of the two girls (bullies) who hurt Suzie. They had threatened to beat me up if I told anyone who they were. We were in the second grade and I was a coward. I left school without permission and ran to my grandparents’ house and got under the covers in the middle bedroom. At that moment I decided to stop talking so I wouldn't have to tell anyone who hit Suzie. When I pulled the covers back from over my head, I pretended my voice was gone.

How Can Republicans Win?
